Extraordinary Times 13: How to Grieve Under Lockdown

Surviving the loss of a loved one is one of the most painful experiences we endure, and the presence and comfort of spending time with others to help get through the difficult days and weeks and months following a death have been essential to healing. Obviously, this is not possible now.

Make arrangements with your funeral home to have a funeral or memorial service that can be streamed on line for family and friends to watch. Depending upon the rules of your funeral home, you may be able to have the service recorded at the funeral or home, or graveside.

Daily rituals offer order when we feel our world is out of order. Some ideas to develop rituals:

  1.  Develop a daily ritual to practice in memory of your loved one:
    • Taking a walk at the same time each day.
    • Reading and reciting something spiritual daily.
    • Teleconference with friends and small groups of family daily to share memories and stories of the deceased at the same time each day.
    • Daily meditations or prayers.
  2. Reach out to close friends and family to talk about your feelings.
  3. Keep a journal of your feelings and memories.
  4. Look at old photos and videos of your loved one to remember happy times and life events you shared.
