The A, B, C’s of Managing Anxiety for the New School Year

Birmingham Maple Clinic has created a new 3-session group designed to help middle school age students cope with the anxiety that comes with the start of the new school year. Therapists Regina Ruelle, LMFT, and Ronnie Hormel, MA, LPC will facilitate the course, which will meet twice before school begins and once after school has already begun. The first group meeting dates are 8/15 and 8/22 from 10:00am – 11:30am.  

Session 1:

  • Introduction: what is Anxiety
  • Break up into smaller groups for discussion questions
  • Rejoin larger group-Process role of Perfectionism
  • Activity- “You and I”-self talk

 

Goals for session: Attendees will gain understanding of anxiety from a feeling perspective, normalization of feelings from group processing and begin to gain applicable behavioral interventions.

Session 2:

  • Introduction into Mindfulness
  • Anxiety Reduction Techniques
  • Group discussion
  • Teach THINK and have attendees complete worksheet

 

Review-What have you received from the workshop so far and how does it compare with your initial goals for the workshop? Parents feedback separate outside of session.

 

Goals for session: Attendees will gain the understanding of Mindfulness and how this practice can assist in reducing anxiety for self and others. Attendees will also become more aware of patterns of behaviors that could be perpetuating their own anxiety.

Session 3:

  • Discussion
  • Activity: Review Mindfulness with fidget toys in pairs
  • Mindful eating with snack
  • Larger group discussion with peer-related concerns

Get feedback- What anxiety mastery have you gained? Parent: How has this adjustment in going back to school been different or similar to previous years?

 

Goal for session: To gain continued practice with focus and those skills that assist in reducing anxiety and provide a support network for the school year adjustment.
