MANAGING
CORONAVIRUS ANXIETY
by the Birmingham Maple Clinic

Step 1
Learn the Facts
Educate yourself from reputable sources and don’t get caught up in misinformation! Institutions like the Center for Disease Control are great resources for travel advisories, day-to-day tips, new confirmed cases, and precautionary measures.
Step 2
Initial Control
Use cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) strategies to manage your initial anxiety. This can start with fact-checking yourself, identifying common thinking errors, and challenging anxious thoughts.

Step 3
Learn Coping Skills
Employ the use of self-care strategies to ease the symptoms of anxiety. This may include:
- Meditation & Mindfulness
- Socializing with friends and family
- Creative outlets such as music and art
- Physical outlets such as yoga and working out
- Breathing exercises, grounding, and muscle relaxation exercises
Step 4
Limit Contagious Anxiety
Viruses aren’t the only thing that can be contagious – spending too much time around other nervous or anxious people can cause you to absorb their anxiety. Consider:
- Limiting your time on social media and watching the news
- Focus on conversational topics other than the coronavirus
- Stay occupied with hobbies and activities not relating to coronavirus
