Birmingham Maple Clinic Offers Help for Managing the Holiday Blues

Birmingham Maple Clinic, providers of mental health services in Michigan for over 30 years, recently announced help for those dealing with seasonal depression. The clinic, which specializes in treatment for depression, eating disorders, ADHD and other serious mental health issues, recently reported that depression can develop or even worsen during the stress of the holidays, making it important to treat symptoms before they become unhealthy or dangerous to the individual.

Lori Edelson, the clinic’s spokesperson, reported that the holidays can be difficult for those who are already depressed or who are prone to depression and anxiety, “Seasonal depression affects millions of Americans each year. The stress that comes with buying gifts, decorating and socializing can cause a severe case of the holiday blues that can go on even after the holidays are over. With some preventative care and proper treatment, however, depression doesn’t have to take over your holidays.”

As noted by the mental health experts at the Birmingham Maple Clinic, there are steps that can be taken to try to reduce stress and avoid seasonal depression. Edelson reported that the Mayo Clinic provides some helpful tips for reducing depression during the holidays in order to avoid unhealthy responses, such as overindulging in food, drugs or alcohol, “The Mayo Clinic recommends that those who are prone to the holiday blues take on some healthy habits for the holidays, including learning healthy ways of coping with stress and learning how to maintain realistic goals and expectations. “ Adds Edelson, “At our treatment center in Michigan, we give patients the tools they need to cope with stress and to develop healthy responses to holiday stress and anxiety. By combining awareness of potential triggers and symptoms, we help patients learn to start enjoying the season again.”
