Expanding on Dr. Niven’s thoughts, Birmingham Maple Clinic therapist Carrie Krawiec offers this advice: “A good rule of thumb is criticism is an attack on a person whereas a complaint is a comment on behavior. Briefly examine a critical comment for ‘What can I learn or do differently from this?’ If you or the critiquing party cannot shift language from criticism to complaint it’s a strong indicator that the message is to hurt not help guide you to improvement.”
