About David Garvelink, MA, LLP

David Garvelink has a Masters of Arts Degree in Clinical Psychology from Mercy College of Detroit where he received additional training in substance abuse treatment. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Michigan State University.  He has worked in the Mental Health Field for over 30 years and has been in private practice as a Licensed Masters Level Clinical Psychologist (MA, LLP) since 1987.

His practice includes both adolescents and adults for an array of mental heath issues. One third of his practice is devoted to clients with substance abuse/addiction concerns and their families.  He has worked extensively with Emotional/Anger Management and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in conjunction with psychiatrists, psychologists specializing in testing and ADHD savvy academic coaches.

He has been a presenter to faculty, students and parents regarding substance abuse as well as emotional/anger management using Rational Emotive Behavioral Treatment (REBT) concepts and has served as a facilitator of the ADHD educational seminar, “ADHD: What It Is and Is Not.”  He has been a consulting psychologist to several Birmingham area private schools as well.

Treatment Modalities he utilizes include: Individual and Family Sessions, Didactics and Substance Abuse Recovery Group Therapy with Adolescents, Young People and Adults. He tailors Intensive Outpatient Treatments specifically to the needs of clients using combinations of these modalities as well. He also has done many Substance Abuse Interventions at private residences.

He has published numerous articles with publications including The Michigan Lawyers Weekly, The Birmingham Observer and Eccentric Newspapers, and the Birmingham Bloomfield Families in Action (BBFA) publication “Connections.”

Mr. Garvelink served as a Birmingham Community Coalition (BCC) member, and was a member of a grass roots community organization, “Putting on the Brakes Against the Medical Marijuana Movement,” directed by Mary Ann Solberg, former Troy Community Coalition Executive Director and U.S. Deputy “Drug Czar” to the President. For three years he served as a Board Member and Newsletter Editor for the Birmingham Bloomfield Families in Action (BBFA) and subsequently served on its Advisory Board.

During the spring of 2010 he taught a continuing education class as part of Wayne State University’s SOAR program, “Chemical Addiction in Older Adults.” In December of 2010, he established a ¾ house for those in need of a safe transition from chemical dependence to a recovery lifestyle called “The Birmingham Segue to Recovery House” (Website: thebirminghamseguetorecoveryhouse.wordpress.com.) which he also manages.
