Next month is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, designed to raise awareness among communities and organizations around the critical issues of child abuse and neglect, and to education the public on child abuse prevention. As part of National Child Abuse Prevention Month, the state of Michigan also recognizes April 16th as Michigan Child Abuse Prevention & Awareness Day, held at the steps of the State Capital in downtown Lansing.
According to the US Department of Health’s Child Welfare Information Gateway, which promotes the safety, permanency, and well being of children and youth, prevention is the key to reducing child abuse and neglect in the US. The site reported, “Prevention is the best hope for reducing child abuse and neglect and improving the lives of children and families. Strengthening families and preventing child abuse requires a shared commitment of individuals and organizations in every community.”
The Birmingham Maple Clinic provides mental health counseling and treatment for victims of child abuse and their families, in an effort to “break the cycle” of abuse that can span multiple generations. By working with the community and recognizing the upcoming Michigan Child Abuse Prevention & Awareness Day, the clinic hopes to raise awareness about this critical problem in our community.
For more information on how to recognize the signs of child abuse and how to prevent child abuse in your community, please visit the US Department of Health & Human Services departments Child Welfare Information Gateway at https://www.childwelfare.gov.
